GIZ: Climate-Related Water Risk Assessment for Georgia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia

The GIZ CRED project, in collaboration with EarthYield Advisories, is evaluating water-related climate risks in Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia. By analyzing droughts, floods, and heatwaves, the study integrates these risks into economic modeling to support climate-resilient policies

The GIZ project "Policy Advice for Climate-Resilient Economic Development (CRED)" aims at adapting economic development to climate change. In this context it is also important to answer the following questions:

What are present water risks and how will they develop in the future?

What economic impacts will they cause?

What are suitable adaptation measures?

EarthYield Advisories was awarded to develop climate-related water risk assessments for Georgia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. The ultimate goal of this assessment is to integrate water-related risks into economic modeling and policy advice activities in these countries. We assess both chronic and acute water-related risks, such as droughts, floods and heatwaves, with hydrological and climatic modeling as well as literature analysis. The project required intense climate modeling using up-to-date CMIP6 models and Python to calculate future projections and annual probabilities of occurrence. Furthermore, we identify suitable adaptation measures for the most prevalent risks. By leveraging publicly available data and collaborating with national partners, we provide comprehensive risk assessments and visualizations to support climate-resilient economic planning.

The project completed in March 2025. All publications of this assignment will be made available on this project site soon.
